Common Questions About Window Films
How long will window film last?
A good quality window film such as 3M will last 15 to 20 years or more, depending on several factors:
(1) the type of film applied, (2) the type of glass the film was applied to, (3) the particular climate in which it was applied.
What is fading?
Fading is a complex issue because each and every material has a different propensity to degrade from exposure to ultra violet radiation and other contributory factors. For example, wood is extremely vulnerable to fading, from sunlight (both visible and invisible light effect fading). Different types of hard wood floors have varying tolerance levels to fading from exposure to sunlight. Dyes, especially fabric dyes, are complex chemical molecules that are very sensitive to UV light. UV rays break up the chains of these molecules, changing their color, resulting in what we call “fading.” Although most fading is caused by UV light there are other contributing factors, such as visible light, heat, humidity, artificial lighting, and poor dye anchorage. Window film is used to filter out up to 99.9% of the UV light and up to 79% of the heat; these are two of the major factors that contribute to fading.
NOTE: It is important to stress that no window film or glazing product will totally prevent or stop fading.
Will 3M window film stop my furniture from fading?
Nothing completely stops fading. 3M films are designed to help reduce the major causes of fading (ultra violet light, visible light, and solar heat), thus prolonging the life of your furnishings.
The ultra violet (UV) protection used in 3M proprietary adhesive system is indefinite. It does not lose its effectiveness over time. Testing done after 10 years showed the ultra violet transmission to be <1%.
Is it safe to film dual pane windows?
Yes. 3M has designed window films that are safe for dual pane glass. Ask about warranties available thru 3M that will match your existing window warranty.
What is the difference between the new 3M Prestige Series and the 3M Scotchtint Series?
The new Prestige Series use no metals. Day or night you will have a clear view, there is no mirrored appearance. Up to 99.9% of the UV light is eliminated while at the same time up to 66% of the heat is reduced.
How do I clean my 3M window film?
After thirty (30) days, you may clean 3M films using normal household cleaning solutions, including ammonia based products: i.e. Windex, and a soft, lint-free cloth or towel. You may also use a squeegee to clean the films. Abrasive products which would scratch or damage the film should not be used.
How would window film affect my house plants?
Generally speaking, the application of window film will not have any adverse affect on the growth of most indoor plants. In some cases where plants are in constant direct sunlight for long periods of time the plant may actually thrive after film is installed.
It may be wise to consult your local nursery for advice in the case of exotic plants.
